Clifton, Oklahoma, was the town that Meeker was before the railroad bypassed it. Established in 1891 with the opening of the Sac and Fox and Iowa lands for settlement, Clifton was a local community that was relocated when the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, built its line nearby. Residents moved their town to the railway site, which became Meeker, and the original town of Clifton was eventually abandoned.
